About Sayan Reserve

Established in 1976, Sayan Reserve (Sainsky Zapovednik) spans the mountainous border between Krasnoyarsk Krai and the Tuva Republic in southern Siberia, Russia. This vast nature reserve protects a remote section of the Eastern Sayan Mountains, featuring an exceptional range of landscapes from dense Siberian taiga to alpine tundra. Elevations vary dramatically from roughly 600 to over 2500 meters, creating numerous ecological zones and fostering a rich tapestry of flora and fauna. The reserve serves as habitat for rare and endangered species including the Siberian ibex, snow leopard, reindeer, and various types of eagles and woodpeckers. Its wilderness terrain harbors intact old-growth forests dominated by Siberian pine, spruce, and larch, as well as pristine rivers supporting native fish populations. Historically, the area has been shaped by indigenous cultures and traditional land uses, with the reserve established to preserve its ecological integrity from logging and industrial development. Today, the Sayan Reserve stands as a critical stronghold for conservation and scientific research, attracting specialized ecotourists, researchers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Due to its strict protection status, public access is highly regulated and primarily focused on guided scientific tours and limited eco-visitation. The natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and cultural heritage offer a rare glimpse into Siberia's unspoiled mountain wilderness. Visitors who venture into the Sayan Reserve are rewarded with remote, scenic hiking, excellent wildlife photography opportunities, and a profound sense of solitude among Siberia's most striking wilderness landscapes.
